I write you from a (very delayed) flight to Athens Greece. I am Aunt to four young adults, and I take each on a trip for his/her high school graduation gift.
It’s my way of exposing them to other cultures in order to gain perspective and respect for others, as well as encourage continued education in life. The trips allow me to have them all to myself for a brief time to really get to know each as a human being.
It fills me with awe to witness the person each has become, and to also get a glimpse of the one he/she is growing into. I’m grateful they indulge me!
The first wanted to go to London and Paris. She was mesmerized by the museums, sights, chocolate croissants and the draw of Versailles, and loved it so much she went back to Paris for a course one summer.
The second chose Italy, mostly because he loved Italian food (and architecture, but mostly food). There, on a small cobblestone street in the charming town of Orvieto he discovered a love of travel, literally sitting himself down in the middle the road to take it all in on our last night there.
Today, I sit in a seat beside the third as we depart for Greece. I am giddy with excitement for the days ahead. Just me, an 18-year-old mensch, a guidebook and a journey to embark upon.
Adventure, whether a trip, experiment with a new recipe, or foray into an unfamiliar workout not only opens the mind, but the soul as well. You can truly experience one every day.
For example, I am helping a client avoid sabotaging her diet and exercise program during Ramadan. Together we have created strategies to navigate the pitfalls that have plagued her in the past. What a treat to learn about her culture, traditions and challenges during such a special and spiritual time. A true gift!
When was your last adventure?
Please take a moment to examine the last couple of days, and pinpoint an adventure you experienced. What did you learn? How did it change you? And importantly, what’s next?
One small adventure leads to another, and next thing you know you’re on a flight to Greece. Have a great week!
