Today is Election Day. A day when people all over the country will vote to choose their governors, congress people and decide on proposals, among other things.

It started me thinking about what kinds of choices we make every day.   Consciously or subconsciously, we make hundreds of “elections” a day, and these comprise who we are:  What we wear, do, eat, and drink.  Who we call, email or spend time with. What projects we tackle, and which we set aside.

Some are in our control, and some not -- but we can control how we choose to respond to the outcome.

Let’s use today to evaluate how we "elect" to do things every day.

In particular, let’s focus on the rewards we elect to give ourselves for achieving small or large milestones.  How do you opt to celebrate good times?  Deal with bad times?  Handle times of stress?

Certainly when we achieve something we’ve been striving for we deserve a treat! However, often the “treat” can be contrary to what was just achieved.

For example, have you ever rewarded your weight loss or a workout with ice cream or pizza? A successful day at work with going out, and feel exhausted the next day?

Instead, how can you reward yourself strategically so you will feel strong, and motivated?

In place of that chocolate chip cookie in reward for losing weight, how about buying yourself a new outfit to show off that hot body?  In place of that decadent restaurant after a rough day, how about making it a time to get together with someone you enjoy over some exercise or a new healthful recipe you want to share?

What is on your list of “rewards” and how can you make it align with and reinforce your goals?

Please spend five minutes creating your list of self-rewards.  Feel free to share with me how you might slightly alter it to spoil yourself in a different way, one that reinforces what you’re trying to achieve.

You have the power to make mindful choices and even a small shift in your choice can make a big difference in how you feel at the end of day.

I vote for YOU today!

Note: this entry originally appeared on election day in November 2014, and is still relevant today and I though the perfect reminder to engage in self care today and always. I’ve also added some inspiring photos pulled from friend’s Facebook pages today. #vote
